چکیده

The tracking of space objects requires frequent and accurate monitoring for collision avoidance. As even collision events with very low probability are important, accurate prediction of collisions require the representation of the full probability density function (PDF) of the random orbit state. Through representing the full PDF of the orbit state for orbit maintenance and collision avoidance, we can take advantage of the statistical information present in the heavy tailed distributions, more accurately representing the orbit states with low probability. The classical methods of orbit determination (i.e. Kalman Filter and its derivatives) provide state estimates based on only the second moments of the state and measurement errors that are captured by assuming a Gaussian distribution. Although the measurement errors can be accurately assumed to have a Gaussian distribution, errors with a non-Gaussian distribution could arise during propagation between observations. Moreover, unmodeled dynamics in the orbit model could introduce non-Gaussian errors into the process noise. A Particle Filter (PF) is proposed as a nonlinear filtering technique that is capable of propagating and estimating a more complete representation of the state distribution as an accurate approximation of a full PDF. The PF uses Monte Carlo runs to generate particles that approximate the full PDF representation. The PF is applied in the estimation and propagation of a highly eccentric orbit and the results are compared to the Extended Kalman Filter and Splitting Gaussian Mixture algorithms to demonstrate its proficiency.

Real Time Calibration of Strap-down Three-Axis-Magnetometer for Attitude Estimation

Three-axis-magnetometers (TAMs) are widely utilized as a key component of attitude determination subsystems and as such are considered the corner stone of navigation for low Earth orbiting (LEO) space systems. Precise geomagnetic-based navigation demands accurate calibration of the magnetometers. In this regard, a complete online calibration process of TAM is developed in the current research t...

(Preprint) AAS NONLINEAR SEQUENTIAL METHODS FOR IMPACT PROBABILITY ESTIMATION

Orbit determination in application to the estimation of impact probability has the goal of determining the evolution of the state probability density function (pdf) and determining a measure of the probability of collision. Nonlinear gravitational interaction and non-conservative forces can make the pdf far from Gaussian. This work implements three nonlinear sequential estimators: the Extended ...

The Particle Filter and Extended Kalman Filter methods for the structural system identification considering various uncertainties

Structural system identification using recursive methods has been a research direction of increasing interest in recent decades. The two prominent methods, including the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and the Particle Filter (PF), also known as the Sequential Monte Carlo (SMC), are advantageous in this field. In this study, the system identification of a shake table test of a 4-story steel struct...

Schmidt-Kalman Filter with Polynomial Chaos Expansion for Orbit Determination of Space Objects

Parameter errors in orbital models can result in poor orbit determination (OD) using a traditional Kalman filter. One approach to account for these errors is to consider them in the so-called Schmidt-Kalman filter (SKF), by augmenting the state covariance matrix (CM) with additional parameter covariance rather than additively estimating these so-called “consider” parameters. This paper introduc...

A New Modified Particle Filter With Application in Target Tracking

The particle filter (PF) is a novel technique that has sufficiently good estimation results for the nonlinear/non-Gaussian systems. However, PF is inconsistent that caused mainly by loss of particle diversity in resampling step and unknown a priori knowledge of the noise statistics. This paper introduces a new modified particle filter called adaptive unscented particle filter (AUPF) to overcome th...
